A well written, well thought out book that surprised and inspired me。 While being almost an essay in nature, this book has many relatable characters, an engaging plot, a great story arc and a range of emotions one would not expect from something that can be turned into a PhD thesis in no time。 It surprised me just how much information and reasoning was seamlessly integrated with nicely flowing plot and engaging character interactions。 The theory explained in the book has stand the test of time a A well written, well thought out book that surprised and inspired me。 While being almost an essay in nature, this book has many relatable characters, an engaging plot, a great story arc and a range of emotions one would not expect from something that can be turned into a PhD thesis in no time。 It surprised me just how much information and reasoning was seamlessly integrated with nicely flowing plot and engaging character interactions。 The theory explained in the book has stand the test of time and has been inspiring change in the manufacturing industry and well beyond it。 If we can only figure out a reliable way to make more books like this on other scientific and hard to approach topics topics we can revolutionize entire filed of education! 。。。more

An easy read, with a simple, straight-forward insight: the strength of a chain is given by its weakest link。 It also provides good advice for hikes: put the fat kid in front :)

Easy way to dip toes into Theory of Constraints for casual readerThe fictionalized account of Alex’s professional and personal challenges, along with his trials and tribulations set the frame for discovering and applying the theory of constraints。 The story is a little contrived, but much more interesting than sitting through a lecture and/or mathematical proof。 By reading this book, I learned something valuable that can be applied to manufacturing and business process。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Es el libro que todo ingeniero industrial debe leer。 Considero que es la biblia de la profesión。 El autor escribió una gran novela, una novela de la vida de un gerente / director de producción en la lucha por salvar la fábrica。 Fiel muestra de la teoría de las restricciones。 Excelente novela, enganchadora desde el inicio。

Who is this book for? Anyone sitting the PM or APM modules for ACCA, CIMA students, production managers, and CEO’s。 It’s a book that is very easy to read at all levels because it is written in the style of a thriller novel。 The book contextualises the theory of constraints (TOC) into a real-world scenario。 TOC uses a Socratic method of approach by identifying the systematic problem behind an observed cause/issue。 It challenges common business practices and conventional ways of thinking。 The book Who is this book for? Anyone sitting the PM or APM modules for ACCA, CIMA students, production managers, and CEO’s。 It’s a book that is very easy to read at all levels because it is written in the style of a thriller novel。 The book contextualises the theory of constraints (TOC) into a real-world scenario。 TOC uses a Socratic method of approach by identifying the systematic problem behind an observed cause/issue。 It challenges common business practices and conventional ways of thinking。 The book clears the confusion around performance measurements, efficiencies, productivity and company goals。 The three most important areas of focus:•tThroughput: the rate the system generates money through sales。 Money coming in。•tInventory: all the money invested in things it intends to sell。 Money in the system。•tOperational Expense: The money spent to turn inventory into throughput。 The money you pay to make throughput happen。The Goal: Increase throughput while simultaneously reducing both inventory and operating expense。A system only moves as fast as the slowest moving person (the bottleneck)。 TOC is a process involving five fundamental steps to help identify and alleviate these limitations。•tStep 1: Identify the system’s constraint。•tStep 2: Decide how to exploit the system’s constraint。•tStep 3: Subordinate everything else to the decisions of Step 2。•tStep 4: Elevate the system’s constraint。•tStep 5: If a constraint is broken in Step 4, go back to Step 1。The bottom line is that the goal of any business is to ‘make money'。Keeping people working and making money isn’t the same thing。 Just because you’re paying for someone doesn’t mean they should be busy all the time, it could cause more harm than benefit。Three simple questions: What to change, what to change to, and how to cause the change? The book did touch on other themes that I felt were noteworthy: •tThe importance of team buy-in•tWork/life balance and taking time out for reflection•tCultural difficulties and transformation of mindsetsI loved that this book was written by a Scientist applying his empirical way of thinking into the business world。 It really hits back to when I initially trained to be one, this method of troubleshooting can actually be applied in the business world。 Eliyahu has paved the way :) 。。。more

I never thought there's a genre for "Business Novels"。 One of our lecturers recommended us this book。 I liked the idea that Goldratt explained a subject in form of a novel instead of a non-ficiton book which might be tiring with endless explanations and formulas。 Besides explaining problems in operations, it really had a story 😂It's a different approach of getting into a subject。The book was great, but I don't think I'll read any of his other books (for pleasure), because it takes away the pleas I never thought there's a genre for "Business Novels"。 One of our lecturers recommended us this book。 I liked the idea that Goldratt explained a subject in form of a novel instead of a non-ficiton book which might be tiring with endless explanations and formulas。 Besides explaining problems in operations, it really had a story 😂It's a different approach of getting into a subject。The book was great, but I don't think I'll read any of his other books (for pleasure), because it takes away the pleasures of reading novels and diving into another world。 。。。more

Really liked this fable-style book to help explain ongoing improvement in a manufacturing setting。

I read this for a Supply Chain/Operations Management course in college and I think it's a worthy book as it does make quite a few good points and brings up fundamentals that are important to know- all in novel format。 So it's not as dry as some nonfiction business books but it's kind of funny because the actual story is quite melodramatic。 Failing marriage! At risk of losing job! Numbers are not where they should be! Excellent audiobook production。 Some elements are a bit dated, but really nice to read a business book in a novel form。 Many business elements are defined clearly and the novel format is one big example, making the abstract business ideas more practical。

Good from a technical perspective but the backstory of the main character and his wife was cringeworthy。

The main character learns to be not terrible at his job through a series of conversations with a mentor figure, but he takes so damn long to learn anything that I kept wanting to scream at him。 Some of the metaphors used in the book felt strained。 Definitely not as fun or polished as The Phoenix Project。However, the underlying ideas are wonderfully radical。 Doing unneeded work masks available system capacity。 Most work sounds useful, but really just creates inventory。 Fuck inventory。

A book about business management in the form of a novel。 I've got mixed feelings on this one。On one hand the writing style and overall plot is comprehensible to a wide audience。 It lacks the overbearing language and concepts of academia in addition to the excessive allegories, allusions, and metaphors that can make literature nebulous。 The setting of a struggling manufacturing plant creates an environment to discuss the lessons of process improvement that those of the business persuasion can rel A book about business management in the form of a novel。 I've got mixed feelings on this one。On one hand the writing style and overall plot is comprehensible to a wide audience。 It lacks the overbearing language and concepts of academia in addition to the excessive allegories, allusions, and metaphors that can make literature nebulous。 The setting of a struggling manufacturing plant creates an environment to discuss the lessons of process improvement that those of the business persuasion can relate to。 For the first two thirds of the book there were quite a few down to earth and practical examples of how a business can look for bottlenecks and see the big picture of an inefficient system despite the workers and machinery being extremely efficient。 In the last third of the book the concepts became a bit too intricate for my limited knowledge of the manufacturing world。 The examples of moving matches from one station to another based on a roll of a die, the challenges of keeping all of the boy scouts together while hiking, and the bet of getting an order out on time were excellent examples to show the problems that can arise in different processes。While many of the lessons are valuable and well illustrated, a few too many things lined up too perfectly and disrupted my enjoyment of this book。 Jonah (who is obviously Eli Goldratt) was able to meet or fly in whenever the main character needed his help in what appears to be pro bono (vague promises of payment were made but no actual financial transactions were mentioned)。 Additionally, it seems that the protagonist was able to figure out the key pieces of knowledge he needed for each step based on extremely open ended Socratic questions that Jonah asked。 From my real world experience, those excessively broad Socratic questions lead people with limited experience on the topic to stab around in the dark in the hopes of finding the answer。In the end, Mr。 Goldratt was able to give comprehensible examples of some key aspects of process improvement。 The plot was able to show the impact of his ideas on a business in a manner that relatable to the target audience。 As for picking up another of his books, I don't plan to unless it comes up on a reading list for my work self development program。 。。。more

Simple questions and definitions can change your perspective on traditional manufacturing terms。 A good book for starters to understand business process and what it takes to achieve the true goal for any organization。

I liked the book very much。 I already had some knowledge with Lean and Kanban in software development and I knew the basics of the Theory of Constraints - it has a strong influence in the culture of our company。Still, reading - or in my case, listening to - the book was an amazing experience。 Apart from the sound effects and the immersive style, which some people don't like (I do!), the overall narrative is well thought out。 There are a few more difficult parts where the logical connections are I liked the book very much。 I already had some knowledge with Lean and Kanban in software development and I knew the basics of the Theory of Constraints - it has a strong influence in the culture of our company。Still, reading - or in my case, listening to - the book was an amazing experience。 Apart from the sound effects and the immersive style, which some people don't like (I do!), the overall narrative is well thought out。 There are a few more difficult parts where the logical connections are explained, but mostly it is approached 2 or 3 times in different ways。 The various personalities of the staff and his family help a lot to get a full picture of "what it's all about"。I thought I knew what I was going to read, but in the end I was very pleasantly surprised and I feel like I could lead a production plant now :DThe transfer to my job as an agile coach is a bit more difficult。 You can't use these concepts so easily in knowledge work, but still it helps to understand certain parts of the work better。 And especially get better insights where the roots are。 。。。more
